Её мать умерла, когда она родилась (это первое предложение в романе), а отец отнёс её на воспитание к прачке - в одной руке бельё для стирки, в другой - младенец. Потом она росла никем не любимая и сама, ясное дело, никого не любила, кроме самой себя, о чём там рассказано во многих технических подробностях. И вообще никто там на этом острове Доминика никого не любил, потому что таково наследие колониализма. Очень мощная вещь, злая и мрачная-премрачная.
