Have a look at the rest of the book. Recon is a military word meaning 'gather information about'. I bet this character talks about everyday things in a silly military way, this is probably another example of this.
Therefore I'd translate this as
"Peform a reconnaissance mission to gather information about the eggs belonging to Retief (Goosen?)"
