The night before the 1986 Jim Clark Memorial Rally, Colin asked me if I could co-drive for him - I think he must have been desperate! Anyway, we competed together in his Talbot Sunbeam, and it was clear that he knew how to drive. After that I went along to the Scottish Rally and helped to organise the team, because Colin already had a co-driver arranged for Scottish Championship events. At the end of 1986 he got his Vauxhall Nova and asked me if I would co-drive for him in the 1987 National Championship. I said that 1 would be glad to do the first two or three events to see how things worked out - and the rest is history.
