do you mean "to reckon with one's host?" Otherwise it doesn't even make any sense.

"To reckon" just means "to take into account", "to consider their wishes".

"To reason that," basically. It's sort of a southern colloquialism. "I reckon the Smiths will be moving out soon, if this keeps up."

Although "dead reckoning" is not colloquialism, I think.

I still have no idea what "reckon without" would mean though.

уже правильно отметили, что это значит "просчитаться" (to fail to take into account). У А.В.Кунина в фразеологическом англо-русском словаре вот что написано: "ошибиться в расчетах, просчитаться" м пример:"When having achieved success as a dramatist? I determined to devote the rest of my life to playwriting. I reckoned without my host." (W.S.Maugham)

кстати, по поводу A HOST IN HIMSELF.Это выражение довольно употребительно. Означает оно "один стоит многих" и опять же могу привести пример из Моэма :
"Princess: You must go and dance.
Fleming:...There are enough men without me. I'm sure Thornton Clay is a host in himself." Как видите, фраза употребляется достаточно просто.
