Дело происходит в сельской местности. Фермер звонит в полицию и говорит:

"There's something going on down in the south forty".

Гугль выдает уйму ссылок, но там в основном названия, а тут нарицательное. Не понимаю.

In some parts of the United States, land is divided into sections (640 acres = 1 square mile). It is further divided into quarter sections (160 acres) and further divided into quarter-quarter sections (40 acres). The south 40 means the south 40 acres of a farm.
