Подскажите пожалуйста, как следующие аббревиатуры - APA, MLA - относятся к writing styles?

Первая непонятна, вторая, возможно - Modern Languages Association, американское филологическое общество. Об отношении к предмету могу только гадать.

APA=American Psychological Association.
И она, и MLA, и агентство Associated Press, и другие авторитетные организации выпускают stylebooks - пособия по оформлению письменных текстов, в самом широком смысле, от правописания и пунктуации до сложного словоупотребления и оформления печатного текста (форматирование, шрифты и т.п.). APA специализируется по таковым пособиям для средней школы. Вот, например (http://www.uwsp.edu/psych/apa4b.htm).

Понятно, что стили, продвигаемые разными пособиями, могут чуть-чуть различаться.

APA -- это формат (для подачи в журнал/издательство рукописей и книг, цитирования, составления библиографий и т.п.), определенный Американской Ассоциацией Психологов (American Psychological Association, будь она неладна вместе со своим форматом!). Им велено пользоваться и в других областях (как правило, гуманитарных). Ужасен тем, что по нему существует 400-страничное руководство, изменяемое каждые несколько лет.

Well... I am a Ph.D girl, too... Поэтому имею с ним дело постоянно. Есть там вполне нормальные, естественные вещи, но:

Ни для одной точной науки (несмотря на то, что стандартный формат для рукописей существует, разумеется) нет четырехсотстраничного (!) руководства, этот формат описывающего. Которое еще вдобавок и все время меняется. Проще надо быть.

Agreed. I just ignore them, at this point. I learned how to do my references, and then various journals change things around anyway, so I no longer shy away from sending incomplete manuscripts out. :)

Как правило, APA рекомендуется для околомедицинских и естественнонаучных специальностей, а MLA - для гуманитарных.
