THE PAIN-FREE HOSPITAL
In April 2000 the Pain Therapy Unit was established in Meyer Hospital. The Unit‘s task was to provide assistance in containing and reducing children’s suffering. The Unit, which was created thanks to a special grant from the Tuscan Government and from citizen donations, is committed to spreading the principles of pain therapy throughout the entire Hospital, so that caregivers may acquire the skills necessary to address the pain-related problems of children’s care.
The main goal is to fight pain in all its aspects and in all the different situations within and outside the Hospital, including home services.
In a Pediatric Hospital the issue of pain is different from adult hospitals. Pain in children has multiple and specific aspects which cannot be dealt with by only administering analgesia and drugs - although this kind of treatment plays an essential role.
Very often, besides the physical pain, fear and anxiety related to admittance to hospital itself need to be treated as well.
Therefore, at Meyer Hospital we adopt an integrated and multi-disciplinary approach to the problem of children's pain, which allows us to best understand, measure and treat children's pain and discomfort in all their possible forms and in all healthcare settings in which they may occur.
The Pain Therapy Unit is committed to many activities:
Identify, assess and measure different kinds of pain, so as to define the interventions to be implemented in the different wards to fight pain.
Provide drug sedation for all those procedures which may cause physical pain, fear and anxiety in the hospitalized child (from blood drawing to highly invasive procedures)
Provide specific non-pharmacological techniques to control and reduce pain, such as distraction, relaxation-respiration, hypno-analgesia, etc.
Promote a general awareness of the need to fight pain in children with all available means among healthcare professionals.
Organize training and refresher courses for healthcare professionals on the most advanced techniques of pain treatment
