Just as a point of clarification: Your sentence of of course 100% correct, but the sought meaning is different: as witnessed by the following comment, the OP had in mind that that there was nothing surprising [in something else, e.g. in the fact that Australians are very polite] even though Australia was a penal colony. In that context 'even' without 'though' cannot be used.

'cause — это разговорный вариант, здесь по значению подходит since (вместо even 'cause).
