Может, я не права, но мне кажется, там еще некоторый элемент елейности должен присутствовать. Впрочем, скорее всего я слишком много требую.

a blunder is more like a mistake, right? I don't think that's it. this one here seems to give a better insight into what it's actually supposed to mean http://dic.academic.ru/dic.nsf/ushakov/747834 and even offers a debatable translation - pompous triviality - but there's gotta be something better than that.

I'm thinking (well-meant or otherwise) nonsense maybe? the tricky thing about this one is that it can refer to talk and action alike (judging by that Krupskaya example anyway).

okay I'll back off :) what I meant was that one can both говорить и делать благоглупости (that's my understanding of it) and I thought bunk was rather about verbal nonsense, whereas 'nonsense' itself is more universal. pompous nonsense? haha sounds like a Roman name :)

ну может я как-то не так поняла пример второй из ушакова. но мне все равно нонсенс нравится больше, чем platitude и triviality, которые подразумевают банальность скорее, а там вон в синонимах в основном чушь, вздор, абсурд.

вот-вот, я тоже склоняюсь к well-meant, подумавши. все-таки в pompous/pretentious благо-теряется. но мне все равно кажется, что зря это привязывают только к болтовне, ну да ладно, автору поста должно быть виднее. а в идеале конечно нужен тоже неологизм какой-то ведь. benenonsense :)

well-meant удачно тем, что по-моему имеет оттенок "хотели как лучше, получилось как всегда". при этом pompous platipustude, кажется, оверкилл, потому что эти платитюдс уже сами по себе напыщенные довольно, если верить словарям (http://www.thefreedictionary.com/platitude).
