However, I make no complaint ; truth benefits her faithful ones alone : all else than truth is nowhere in practical medicine.

Date: 2014-10-26 02:00 pm (UTC)Я бы написала "truth alone benefits her faithful ones", если бы фраза этим и заканчивалась. И "truth benefits her faithful ones alone", если она заканчивалась бы пояснением "all else than truth is nowhere in practical medicine".

Date: 2014-10-26 08:15 pm (UTC)Both readings are grammatically possible. In this situation, grammar does not provide any useful guidance - we need to second-guess what the narrator may have meant. A good writer would never use a construction that is grammatically ambiguous (unless this is done on purpose as a poetic device), but we are not dealing with a good writer here. So the question is, what reading sits better with the general message of this paragraph? I believe the former interpretation does, for the reasons explained above: it does not have annoying redundancies, which probably even a bad writer would try to avoid, and the other one does not make sense semantically: It is not just truth adepts who benefit from the truth, but every practitioner, as the last clause implies.
Let me emphasize however that this all boils down to personal perception: I may read it this way and you may do it your way. There is no unique correct answer here, it is not math.
