This may be formally correct but I doubt I ever heard this usage, only "raises its quills". Direct googling of the above expression yields hundred of sites about porcupines, while expressions with "bristles" next to nothing.

Я никого не пытаюсь убедить. Я описал экспериментальный факт - сочетание "raises its quills" дает колоссальное количество хитов(более 30000), а "bristles its quills" or "bristles up its quills", как предложили выше, меньше 10. Лично для меня оба глагола звучат одинаково правильно, но статистика указывает на то, что у нас совершенно разный уровень распространенности.

А вы вообще не допускаете возможности, что в одном случе из ста вы можете быть неправы?

Про 10 результатов вы серьёзно загнули, просто скажу, что на 3-х больших сайтах блогов bristled по отношению к дикобразам упоминается несколько тысяч раз.

Вы правы, по моему опыту, ПОЧТИ всегда.

Ключевое слово - почти.

К сожалению, посчитать, сколько раз упоминается слово bristles по отношению к дикобразом, невозможно. Видно только, что оба глагола - легитмные. Для того, что бы их СРАВНИТЬ, надо выбрать одно выражeние - например, "does its quills", where does ={bristles up|raises}, и такие две однородные конструкции можно сравнивать. Каждая из них будет встречать во много раз реже, чем упоминания данного глагола в связи с дикообразами вообще. Но коэффициент масштабирования, с точностью до порядка величины, будет одинаковым. Следовательно, если выражение в кавычках для Bristles упоминается в 2000 раз реже, чем для raises, можно быть уверенным, что в принципе первый глагол употребляется в данном контексте как минимум в 200 раз реже. QED.
