Hello to all of you.
I am not sure if this is the place to ask for some help on a word I cannot find a proper romanization of, but I have been directed here by a helpful person of the "linguaphiles" community. If possible, could you look into this?


Some background information on my LJ-username;
When you've seen the Tomb Raider movie, you must've noticed Lara speaking a Siberian language at the point where she arrives in "the dead zone". Noticeable is that she speaks of "crajehru metéor" (I'm sorry, this is the only thing I could make of it). It could be possible that it is simply a non-existant word in the Russian language, as it has been used for a movie...
But I was fascinated by the sound of it, as I am fascinated by languages and used it for my LiveJournal. As time passed I started wondering if I had written it the proper way (most definatly not...)
I know in the movie "crajehru" is supposed to mean crater.

If possible, can someone give me the Russian translation of "crater", both cyrillic and romanized?


I would gladly appreciate any kind of help as I am running low on possibilities.

I suppose, Lara tried ti say somthinh like "krateru" - it means "for smth." (I don't know how to say "krater" on English).
And we don't have Siberian language - only Russian there, in Siberia:-))))

well, there is a group of Paleo-Siberian languages unrelated to Russian spoken across Siberia (Ket, Selkup, Nganasan, Enets, Khanty, Dolgan, Tshulym-turkic come to mind), so it's not really "only Russian". Though, of course, pretty much everyone there does speak Russian as well as their native language, the places having been part of the Russian Empire for so long.

Well, I'm from Siberia :))) And, of course, I know about some language groups (just don't know how to say it on Eglishe - for example, Gornaya Shoria etc.) But I meant common people living in Siberia. And I REALLY doubt that English girl Lara could know any language from the group :-)) 'Couse not every siberian knows it even in universities.
I may by wrong - I'm not insisting on it;) I just tell what I know from my our experience:)))

you have a good point; I just wanted to clarify that Russian is not the only possibility; besides, is Lara actually speaking the language in the movie, or is she just repeating a word said by the natives? If it is latter, it could quite as easily be a non-russian word as russian.

Well, she was talking about a meteoric crater. I assume the Tanguska meteorite is a well know crater in Siberia?

Well, the meteorite at the Tunguska didn't create an impact crater - the thing blew up high up in the air, and all that was left was miles and miles of flattened taiga and a bunch of buckshot-style fragments in the permafrost marshes. Isn't it a little bit more than you've wanted to know though? :-)

something like a comet followed by a huge explosion had been observed in Siberia near the small river Tunguska in 1905. this Tunguska explosion is a source of all sorts of science-fiction theories starting from an antimatter and not ending in crash of an alien space-ship.

The authors of the movie might have heard about Tunguska meteorite…
