Я бы сказал "желание/стремления/амбиции (по контексту) загоняе/ются в подполье".

да хоть как тут склонять, ...(some people are driven to surface with their tendency to nagging due to lack of attention, don't you know).
человек, задавший вопрос, должен бы суметь разобраться с словом загоняют/загоняются, в зависимости от текста, с которым он работает.
