подскажите пожалуйста, какое слово использовать при пререводе диссертации (по медицине)
thesis или dissertation?

Защита как раз dissertation defense.
In most other cases those words are interchangeable (in my opinion).

"Here is a copy of my dissertation" = "Here is a copy of my thesis".
However, "thesis" has a broader meaning (i.e., you can say "Master's thesis" ( "Дипломная работа на степень Магистра") but you can't say Master's dissertation).

значит если я напишу - thesis - это не будет ошибкой?

Вам нужно перевести титульную страничку? Только что посмотрела как она пишется у нас:

A Dissertation submitted to ..
(Division of Research, or Graduate School, School of medicine.... инстанция, где проходит защита)
in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of

Doctor of Philosophy (Doctor of Medicine)
