То, что мы называем отчаянием, зачастую лишь болезненное возбуждение изголодавшихся надежд ???
 
Мне не верится в то, что мой бессмысленный перевод - единственно верный, (должны быть и другие бессмысленные переводы)))

i think возбуждение and изголодавшихся are wrong here.
eagerness is impatient enthusiasm for something.
unfed hope is hope that gets no results.

there was nothing that fed the hope, nothing to make the hope seem reasonable. maybe "no results" was not a good way of explaining that.
