The basic assumptions in the transpersonal approach are that group members are free to make choices and be responsible for their behavior and actions. As group members, they have the power to determine their destiny, despite their heredity and environmental background. In this respect the group experience becomes therapeutic. People are responsible for their feelings and thoughts, while they strive for personal integration. Taking responsibility to develop and mature in a congruent manner is the only way to be, if people want to achieve personal power. To do this people must move to a place where they do not depend on others for direction or protection. The major task of the leader and the group members is to help people discover what is their full potential and how to achieve it (e.g., to go further and do more than group members think is possible). In this regard, the transpersonal approach describe as a place where:
Positive energy is "stoked as a fire" and the seeker moves to a different state. Once again it is the experience or passion that remains dominant as seekers move toward rebirth. As emotions peak in the dance, the seeker is filled with love towards all things (France, l999, p. 9).
To be a complete person it is paramount to strive for self-integration. When group members' inner state and behavior match, there is little energy wasted within the organism. They will not block themselves or sabotage their energy and they will be more able to respond appropriately and with a greater repertoire of actions that can help satisfy needs. Yet Perls (l969a) believed that integration is never complete, because there is always something to integrate and always something to be learned. Thus people in the group are not to be:

. . . occupied with dealing with symptoms or character structure, but with the total existence of [being] . . . for the aim is to make everyone of us a wholesome person, which means a unified person, without conflicts [and] what we have to do is . . . re-own [our] hidden potential . . . . (pp. 71-72)
