Date: 2012-09-13 05:46 pm (UTC)"A precocious child" might also give some ideas, "yes, my precocious" (as a play on "yes, my precious"), but that does not really sound like a store name
A somewhat humorous attitude might be assumed if some words are used that are a bit negative when used directly. "Smart Alecs". For Americans though this might be a miss, as the negative in "smart alec" might overweigh the humorous and/or ironic.
One more approach could be to use alliteration, also quite popular in commercial names. For example, one may use "Brainy Boys" or "Bright Boys" (Bxxx Bxxx)
However, modern Politically Correct fascism mandates that girls must also be mentioned, and/or even to the exclusion of any maleness in the name or its connotations. I thought about that a bit, but apart from "Gawd-help-us Girrrlz" nothing comes to mind. Sorry ;)))))))
p.s. the most - almost the only - used word for умный in American is "smart". (It means "well-dressed" in English). Every time one's intelligence or wit need to be mentioned, it is "smart" even in more formal contexts.
p.p.s What about "Bright Brats" or "Brainy Brats"? That's alliteration and sex-neutral, possibly (though it somehow makes me think of rats, too - "brat" also has negative connotations ;)))) )
p.p.p.s Another (and much disliked by me) common principle in commercial names in the States is distortion па-падонкавски написания слов. One example of this approach would be something like "Klever Kids™"

Date: 2012-09-14 05:31 am (UTC)It is as irritating as "smart" or other such americanisms, but even more, I perceive it as a word that belongs to the typical low-class, anti-intellectual americans, the majority in that country. That's the guys who llllove "pinky and the brain", and for whom "scientist" immediately associates with "mad". This crowd would always say "rocket science" and "not rocket science" about anything intelligent, yes, you are right there.
I doubt this phrase would be as popular in England (or in the rest of European Union, much of which knows how to speak English now).
-------
But anyway that was an idea.
Here's another one: wiz(zard) boys. - "Wiz Boyz Toyz" if we do it the american way ;))
A quick search does confirm it:
"TOYS at ToyWiz.com"
"Light Visionary Model Concept car · Boyz toyz: H-Racer.." (for grown-up boyz though, this one is)
etc. etc.

Date: 2012-09-14 11:16 pm (UTC)"Grokit" itself is one of a well-known web sites for american students, in case you do not know. And the word has been in common use - since the advent of the Internet etc. I believe the recognition and acceptance would be almost ubiquitous among the younger Internet generation of kids, and among the middle-class Internet-using generation of parents.
A quick search result above mentions a PBS program - what better proof do you want of the fact that the word is in general circulation and commonly understood? Few people may have heard of its Heinlein origin, but - I can testify to that first-hand - it is quite common among the Internet techies, programmers and so on. I first learned it back in the 1990s.
So just do not try to be the smart alec of ru_translate. It is a very good name for a toy store, "GrokIt Science Toys", and the fact this inventive name has not been as overused as "wiz kidz" or something is an advantage, not otherwise.

Date: 2012-09-14 11:34 pm (UTC)I brought up this issue at lunch today and my co-workers laughed at your suggestion. Besides my two points, that they made too, that GrokIt is not a nearly as universally known expression as needed for a toy store, and that the expression "rocket science" has precisely the same meaning as the original (generally positive, but mostly used to characterize something simple or well explained, as in "one does not need to be a rocket scientist to understand"), they brought up another valid point: Groking is opposite to science. Groking entails direct penetration into the essence of things without resorting to analytical or scientific tools.
They also mentioned (without knowing, because the site you mean is NOT well known at all, it is very new) that, as opposed to a toy store, it would be a good name for a science blog.
In any event, it is up to the OP to select either *exact* translation, rendering all meanings and nuances of the original, or to create a new "inventive" name with a completely different meaning.
Oh, and I nearly forgot: You perception that expression 'rocket science' "belongs to the typical low-class, anti-intellectual americans" and "is a low-brow way of talking about somebody's intelligence." is spectacularly wrong. I cannot even imagine where you could have possibly picked up such notion.

Date: 2012-09-15 05:17 am (UTC)And no, I do not like the modern-day barbarians, arrogant, habitually loud, amazingly stupid,. and although fucked up by their parasitic rulers in a spectacular fashion, always ready to teach the rest of the world their supposedly "superior" ways.
Anti-intellectualism of their disgusting culture hits you in the face, and that is where my opposition to their little words comes from. "Smart", "mad scientist", or "rocket science" my arse.
No, I am not objective. I did live among them, the merde on this Earth.

Anyone who is sufficiently well-read and/or has a concept of a wider world beyond the Big Island, so that he begins to see americanisms for what they really are - irritating and low-brow - definitely puts himself beyond the sane masses of humanity.
Or at least that's what pea-brains like to think.
Sure. I understand. I see. I completely grok it.
